Howard “Howdy” Forrester: The MGM Recordings
“Howdy” Forrester supported some of country and bluegrass music’s greatest luminaries. He logged time in Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, worked as side man to “Georgia” Slim Rutland, backed Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, and worked with Roy Acuff as a Smoky Mountain Boy. Through all these partnerships Howdy’s talent on fiddle shined through. Other than bluegrassers, Howdy counted as his admirers Benny Martin, the great contest fiddler, and Eugene Fodor, the great classical violinist. Howdy Forrester’s technique, completely self taught, could cross musical genres. This album, originally recorded in 1958 for MGM with backing musicians Ray Edenton, Junior Husky, Jimmie Riddle and Bashful Brother Oswald, is demonstrative of that fact. Easily jumping from breakdowns, to reels, to waltzes, this collection has Howard “Howdy” Forrester at his finest.

“This set displays Forrester’s immaculate technique, with phrasing, timing and other qualities that his musical contemporaries admired and emulated.”
Dick Spottswood, The Old Time Herald, December 2009
“No doubt many players were influenced by Howdy Forrester. He traveled throughout the world with Acuff and continued to perform on the Grand Ole Opry even after retiring from the road. With the reissue of these classic sides, an entirely new generation of musicians will find inspiration in the superb playing of Howard “Howdy” Forrester.”
